Diseases like diabetes type 2, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, etc. are called “lifestyle” diseases for a reason: they’re caused because of our “lifestyle” or in other words, the choice of food we’ve been eating till now. Change the “lifestyle”, and the body will not only heal but will also develop an immune system that will be more prepared to fight off any viral attack. Knowing how to provide the body with nutrient-dense food can go a long way in preventing and even reversing lifestyle diseases, which when diagnosed, most doctors tell us that we must be on medication for the rest of our lives. But in fact, medicines tax the body even more, especially the liver and kidneys. Why not try out what we’ve recommended? A “healthy” vegan diet, or in other words a Whole-Food Plant-Based (WFPB) diet is nutrient-dense and frees up the energy the body has been using to keep the inflammation down. Well, aren’t we all familiar with roti, sabji, dal, chawal, kachumber, papad, chutney and achar? Moreover, it’s also so easy to make the minor changes required to make the food we eat regularly whole-plant-based. We’ve provided the information at the bottom of each recipe for that.

Why "Whole" Plant Food?

What does “Whole Plant Food” mean? The word “whole” means “complete”. So, it’s nothing but eating plants, viz. fruits, vegetables, legumes, pulses, grains, nuts, and seeds in their natural form, i.e., without processing them in any way. Peeling, extracting, juicing, straining, polishing, refining, etc. all remove some part of the “whole” and make it “incomplete”. Processing of any kind changes the natural form of the food, leaving behind food with calories but less nutrition. Most of these processes also remove the valuable fibre from these foods, something that our body needs to remain in good condition. Whole plant food always contains fibre. That is the bar to follow and you will rarely go wrong.

The question most of us will then ask is why do whole plant foods work like magic to reverse diseases? Well, the answer is simple. Nature has put all that the human body needs into the various plants that we eat. Only plants have the power to harness nitrogen in the air and soil and convert it into animo acids (protein) and harness and store other nutrients like carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals that our body needs. The animals that we eat also eat plants to build muscle and bones. Why not cut out the middleman and get the nutrition directly in its original form? It’s the form that is most bioavailable for the human body, too. Once we get closer to nature and start eating ‘real’ food, we experience its magic and realize that we were meant to thrive on the plant food that is in abundance all around us. All we need to do is to go back to the basic instincts we would have followed as children and not get manipulated and brainwashed by social conditioning or shrewd marketing and advertising into eating foods that are going to harm us or make our bodies overwork and in turn make us sick. Remember, no one gave us the opportunity to choose what food to eat. We just followed what our families and society did. So now here’s the opportunity to really understand and ‘choose’ to look after our health and wellbeing.
